The rings seemed to me like a shallow pool of water at the bottom of a pit. “La discesa” is “The descent”. I associated it with various media inspired by or adjacent to Dante Alighieri’s Inferno– those being: Gustave Doré’s illustrations of The Divine Comedy, Lars von Trier’s The House That Jack Built, and Neil Marshall’s The Descent.

The piece of wood is a processed component of the Vandal Healing Garden and Memorial design.
