Masters Non-Thesis Project

Design: 2023 Fall

Program: Mixed-Use Multi-Family Residential

Concept: broken mineral

Specifications: light-frame lumber structure

Utilizing shou sugi ban (burnt timber cladding) as if it is a “nameless stagehand”, this project seeks to cater to an individual’s approach of the building. The reveal of the iridescent composite panels (between the two building forms) entices one into the serene nature-space which the building sequesters from the highway. The utilization of pastel colors in window and door details is inspired by a broken mineral, which only hints at its interior with flecks of color.

Design Problems:

• lack of sidewalk

• lack of green belt access

• lack of amenities (convenience shops, pedestrian restaurant access)

• highway noise

• lack of “East Moscow identity”

TAKEAWAY

The most successful aspect of the project is the utilization of site space beyond a building footprint, as a generator of value for the community in addition to housing.

Ancillary aspects of the design (stairs, and elevated walkways) suffered due to the project’s deadline.
