romantic symbol, cosmic horror

An asymetrical tripartite composition with typical themes– utilizing the term “romantic symbol” in the familiar sense of Caspar David Friedrich’s Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (below). A single individual in the foreground is contrasted with the sublime environment. The washed out foreground is the ultimate contrast to the weird otherworldly color array of the background. The midground’s colors are inspired by washed-out early 20th century paperbacks, evocative of the post-war expatriates, like Hemingway, who wrote so much about this particular environment.

In my graduate research I was exposed to the work of philosopher Nick Land, and his metaphorical use of H.P. Lovecraft’s mythology. Depicting the aesthetics of these cosmically existential concepts has become a preoccupation.
